September 2025 at Sywell Aerodrome, the Sywell Classic:
Pistons & Props once again delivered one of the most distinctive weekends on the UK classic calendar - blending vintage motoring with aviation heritage in a setting that suits it perfectly.
First Impressions
Arriving at Sywell, the scale of the event was immediately clear. The airfield setting gives the show a natural openness that many classic events lack. Instead of tightly packed showgrounds, cars are displayed against hangars, open runway space and sweeping Northamptonshire skies - and that backdrop makes a difference.
The atmosphere throughout Saturday and Sunday felt relaxed but purposeful. This isn’t just a static car park; it’s a living celebration of machinery. Owners were proud to talk through restoration stories, engine specs and road trips, while spectators moved freely between club stands, trade areas and the runway action.

The Cars
The variety on display was one of the event’s biggest strengths.
Pre-war tourers sat a few rows away from 1960s British sports cars, American muscle, modern classics and carefully preserved 1980s and 1990s performance icons. Car clubs turned out in strong numbers, creating vibrant themed displays that gave the show structure without making it feel rigid.
What stood out most was the diversity of condition and purpose. Some cars were concours-level restorations, polished to near perfection. Others wore their history proudly - stone chips, patina and all - reinforcing that this is an enthusiast-driven event rather than a purely polished showcase.

Runway Action
One of Sywell Classic’s defining features remains the live action element.
The sprint strip and runway demonstrations added energy throughout the weekend. Hearing classic engines run under load - rather than simply idling on display - transformed the event from a visual experience into a full sensory one. V8 burble, straight-six rasp and occasional supercharged whine carried across the airfield.
Hot rods and drag-style builds were particular crowd favourites, drawing spectators to the barriers whenever they lined up. The rawness of the machinery suited the open runway environment perfectly.

Aviation Element
True to its “Pistons & Props” identity, aviation remains central to the event’s character.
Aircraft displays overhead provided a fitting complement to the automotive action below. The sound of radial engines and aerobatic manoeuvres above the airfield reinforced the festival’s theme - mechanical heritage, both on the ground and in the sky.
The combination feels natural rather than forced. At Sywell, classic cars and vintage aircraft share the same historical DNA, and the setting makes that connection tangible.

Overall Verdict
Sywell Classic 2025 proved once again that you don’t need a race circuit to create an engaging automotive event. The airfield location provides character, scale and atmosphere that traditional showgrounds can’t replicate.
Strong club representation, genuine runway action and the added aviation spectacle combined to make it one of the more distinctive classic events of the season. It’s a festival built around passion rather than prestige - and that’s exactly why it works.
