NLS2 2026 Delivers a Dramatic Twist
The second round of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) finally marked the true start of the 2026 season after NLS1 was cancelled due to snow and freezing conditions. With improved weather and a strong grid, expectations were high, and NLS2 delivered a race full of action, tension, and an unexpected outcome.

A Strong Return to the Nordschleife
All eyes were on Max Verstappen as he returned to the Nordschleife, this time behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3. From the very beginning, he showed strong pace, securing pole position and setting the tone for the race.
Throughout the four-hour event, the #3 car looked in control. Clean stints, solid strategy, and consistent lap times allowed Verstappen and his teammates to build a comfortable lead at the front of the field.
By the time the chequered flag fell, it seemed like a dominant and well-deserved victory.

Racing in Classic NLS Fashion
As always at the Nürburgring, the race itself was anything but straightforward.
Multi-class traffic played a crucial role, with GT3 cars constantly navigating slower classes on the narrow and unforgiving Nordschleife. This created several intense moments, where precision and timing were key to avoiding costly mistakes.
Behind the leading Mercedes, competition from BMW, Porsche, and Audi kept the pressure on. While no one could quite match the pace of the #3 car on track, the fight for the podium remained close and competitive throughout the race.

Post-Race Drama Changes Everything
The biggest story of the day, however, came after the race had already finished.
During post-race scrutineering, officials discovered that the #3 Mercedes-AMG had used seven sets of tyres, one more than the regulations allow. This breach resulted in an immediate disqualification.
In a matter of hours, what looked like a dominant win was completely erased.
A New Podium Emerges
With the disqualification of the leading car, the final results were reshuffled:
- Rowe Racing (BMW) inherited the overall victory
- Falken Motorsports (Porsche) moved up into second place
- Black Falcon secured an impressive overall podium finish
For some teams, it was a disappointing way to lose a result. For others, it was an unexpected opportunity they were ready to take.

The Reality of Endurance Racing
NLS2 once again highlighted one of the core truths of endurance racing: it’s not just about speed.
Execution, strategy, and strict adherence to regulations are just as important as performance on track. A small oversight—in this case, one extra set of tyres—was enough to completely change the outcome of the race.
Looking Ahead
Despite the disqualification, Verstappen’s performance cannot be ignored. The pace was clearly there, and if the team can avoid mistakes moving forward, they will be a serious contender for upcoming races, including the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
Final Thoughts
NLS2 2026 will be remembered not just for the racing, but for the controversy that followed. It’s a perfect example of how unpredictable the Nürburgring can be, where nothing is certain until the final results are officially confirmed.
