• An industry first, the Sustainable Championships Index™ (SChI) assesses the sustainability performance of globally recognized motorsport championships.

• A total of 106 championships, four and two wheels, were included in the SChI, with 74 showing some level of engagement with sustainability

• ABB FIA Formula E World Championship leads the pack of sustainability driven championships.

Silverstone (UK), February 9, 2022 – Building on the first of its kind Sustainable Motorsport Index™ initiative launched in July 2021, Enovation Consulting Ltd. is delighted to introduce the Sustainable Championships Index™ (SChI), an industry first index developed to assess and measure the global sustainability performance of international motorsport championships. The SChI is part of the Sustainable Motorsport Index family of indexes, the only global performance system assessing motorsport stakeholders’ sustainability practices against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework and elements of the Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) Framework.

In this assessment, the Sustainable Championships Index applies a rigorous data-driven approach and third-party validation by academic experts to review the sustainability performance of 106 globally recognised motorsport championships. Both racing cars and motorcycles championships, using a variety of propulsion types (EV, ICE, hybrid), were included in this study. The index used 25 sustainability performance criteria to provide a balanced comparison across six broad areas including certifications, accreditations and awards, environmental criteria, social criteria, engagement and partnerships, and sustainability approach. The methodology for this study was developed in collaboration with sustainability expert Paolo Taticchi, Professor of Strategy and Sustainability at UCL School of Management.

Key findings in the 2022 edition of the Sustainability Championships Index show that ABB FIA Formula E World Championship are leading the way in terms of sustainability strategy and implementation, followed by FIA Formula One World Championship in second position, and FIM World Championship Grand Prix (Moto GP) in third. Based entirely on publicly disclosed data collected between July and November 2021, the findings show that while progress is being made among the leaders, with 72 championships appearing in the bottom performance tier, there are still too many that are lagging from behind - highlighting the need for greater disclosure practices across the industry.

Dr. Cristiana Pace, Founder and CEO of Enovation Consulting Ltd.:
“The Sustainability Motorsport Index™ was inspired by the lack of data and
corresponding publication on sustainability practice of the motorsport industry, and by our fervent belief that if you can’t measure something, you can’t improve it. With this white paper, we hope to empower championships with the knowledge of what has been accomplished and of the best practice that has been developed.”

Professor Paolo Taticchi, OMRI, UCL School of Management: “While more advancement is still needed in the area of sustainable transformation, across all sectors, I am encouraged by the progress the motorsport industry has made in recent in years. Based on an independent research-driven approach, the SChITM sheds light on what leading championships are doing well, as well as on areas for improvement for all industry stakeholders to consider. It is through this kind of industry-wide collaboration that meaningful and sustainable transformation can be achieved.”

The Sustainability Championships Index assessment was carried out between July and November 2021 and considered only information disclosed by championships up to and during this period. Any information disclosed following this period will be captured in the next edition of the SChI. All Sustainable Motorsport Index™ white papers will be issued annually, as part of an overarching effort from Enovation Consulting Ltd. to provide oversight and to track progress on sustainability in motorsport.

This first edition of the Sustainable Championship Index white paper is titled “Racing Towards a Sustainable Future: A Review of the Global Sustainability Performance of Motorsport Championships” and includes insightful forewords from sports and sustainability advocates Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu of the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework, ABB FIA Formula E World Championship driver and UN Climate Ambassador Lucas di Grassi. With initiatives like the SChI, motorsport stakeholders are well positioned to work towards a more sustainable future, for the industry and beyond.
