For most students, work experience means spending a few days in an office or local business. For aspiring motorsport photographer Ralph Thompson, it means heading to one of the biggest automotive events in the world.

As part of his school work experience programme, Ralph will be attending Goodwood Festival of Speed with Pit Lane News, where he will have the opportunity to further develop the skills he has been building over the past year.
Quote "I've loved cars and motorsport for as long as I can remember. Photography gives me the chance to combine that passion with my creativity."

Quote "My dad inspired my love of motorsport, and that's what first got me interested in photographing the sport."
Although still in education, Ralph is no stranger to motorsport photography. Over the last twelve months he has worked alongside the Pit Lane News team, covering events, developing his photographic technique and gaining valuable experience in a professional motorsport media environment.

Quote "I wanted my work experience to be linked to something I'm genuinely passionate about, so I reached out to Pitlane News.
When I was offered the chance to cover Goodwood Festival of Speed, I couldn't believe it. It's an incredible opportunity."

Bringing together Formula 1 teams, manufacturers, racing legends, historic machinery and some of the world's most exciting performance cars, the event offers photographers countless opportunities to capture unique moments and tell compelling stories through imagery. For Ralph, the assignment is not simply about taking photographs. It is an opportunity to experience one of motorsport's most prestigious events while applying everything he has learned during the past year.

Quote.. "Goodwood is one of the biggest motorsport events in the world, so I'm really looking forward to learning as much as I can and capturing some great moments." The placement also highlights the value of combining education with real-world experience. While continuing his studies, Ralph has already begun building a portfolio that many aspiring photographers would envy, gaining practical knowledge that cannot always be taught in a classroom. Teachers, family and colleagues have watched his confidence and ability grow throughout the season, with each event bringing new challenges and opportunities to learn.

Quote.. ""This is a great opportunity to develop my photography, gain experience in a professional environment and learn from the people around me."
Looking ahead, Ralph hopes to continue developing his skills within motorsport media. With accreditation opportunities becoming available when he turns 18, Goodwood may prove to be another important step towards a future career in the industry.

For now, however, the focus is firmly on making the most of an unforgettable week and capturing the atmosphere, personalities and machinery that make Goodwood Festival of Speed such a special event. As school work experience placements go, they do not come much bigger than this.
