Silverstone delivered a weekend for the ages. Ash Sutton arrived at the Home of British Motor Racing needing just one point to seal an unprecedented fifth Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship title, and in typically emphatic fashion he did not settle for one point. He won the race. The largest crowds of the season descended on the Northamptonshire circuit to witness history, and Silverstone did not disappoint.

Qualifying and Race to Pole

Saturday's qualifying session opened under Silverstone sunshine with Daryl De Leon heading the pack in group one. Group two produced its own standout moment as Mikey Doble went fastest to claim the Race to Pole grid advantage.

Drama arrived immediately as racing got underway. De Leon forced his way ahead of Doble into the first corner before the two swapped positions throughout the race. Ash Sutton produced one of the moments of the weekend when he completed a high-speed 360-degree spin and rejoined the circuit without damage.

Chris Smiley pitted on lap three with a suspected puncture, Sam Osborne received a ten-second penalty for a false start, and Osamu Kawashima went off into the gravel on his maiden BTCC outing. A full safety car period on lap nine temporarily bunched the field before Tom Chilton made his move late on, passing De Leon to push for the podium. After 18 laps, Doble took the chequered flag ahead of Moffat and Chilton.

Race 1

Sunday morning brought a damp track but improving conditions, with all drivers committing to slick tyres as the circuit dried through the formation lap. Moffat made the stronger start of the two Power Maxed Racing Audis, sprinting clear as Doble momentarily fell behind De Leon before recovering.

The pair ran in formation at the front as Sutton climbed through the field from further back. Tom Ingram fell victim to a collision at Brooklands on lap two, while Dan Lloyd dropped from sixth to seventeenth after starting with the wrong engine map.

Chilton secured third behind the Power Maxed pair. Moffat crossed the line first, edging Doble by just 0.092 seconds, but a five-second track limits penalty dropped him to fourth. Following a stewards review the penalty was rescinded, as it was determined Moffat had been forced off circuit to avoid Kawashima's stricken Hyundai.

Power Maxed Racing celebrated their first ever BTCC one-two, with Moffat reinstated to the top step. Dexter Patterson was confirmed as the 2026 Jack Sears Trophy winner following the race, rounding off a stellar independent season.

Race 2

This was the race the entire paddock had gathered to watch. Sutton needed one point to become the first five-time Kwik Fit British Touring Car Champion, breaking clear of four-time winners Colin Turkington and Andy Rouse. He was never going to settle for a single point.

Dan Lloyd failed to make the grid after his wastegate melted, and Lewis Gilbert was pushed back into the pits with a technical issue before the formation lap was complete. The stage was set.

Starting from 12th, equipped with the soft Goodyear compound and a full TOCA Turbo Boost allocation, Sutton was already up to eighth by the end of lap one. By lap three he had reached fourth and posted the fastest lap of the race, clinching the point that mathematically sealed the title.

He dispatched Chilton through Copse on lap five, passed Moffat on the Wellington Straight two laps later, and swept past De Leon on lap nine to take the lead. He was never seen again. His ninth win of the season and the 56th of a glittering career had rewritten the record books entirely.

Race 3

A wet race was declared for the finale with all drivers on full wet tyres. Moffat inherited the reversed-grid pole, with Ingram and Árón Taylor-Smith alongside him on the front row.

Rowbottom stormed from fifth to lead after the opening lap, muscling past Taylor-Smith on the exit of Luffield. Visibility was poor for everyone behind as spray reduced sightlines to near zero. Moffat found extra grip to pass Rowbottom at the end of lap six, but Rowbottom was now struggling with a misted visor.

Ingram took full advantage, clearing the CPRL Mercedes before making his decisive move on Moffat for the lead on lap 12. With clear road ahead and conditions slowly improving, Ingram pulled away to win by nearly five seconds. Sutton followed in second with Moffat completing the podium.

Ash Sutton is a five-time Kwik Fit British Touring Car Champion. No driver in the 69-year history of the series has ever stood where he stands now. Nine wins from 25 starts, 18 podiums, and a title sealed with four races still to run. The record belongs to him alone.

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship concludes at Brands Hatch GP on 10-11 October. The title has been decided. The final chapter of a historic season remains to be written.
