Knockhill delivered everything the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship demands of it. Rain, sunshine, incident, and racing so close it defied the narrow confines of Scotland's only internationally graded circuit. Cataclean Plato Racing arrived at Round 6 with momentum and left with it emphatically confirmed. Ash Sutton left with something even more significant.
Free Practice
Aiden Moffat topped the timing sheets in free practice with his Power Maxed Racing-prepared car, with teammate Dexter Patterson a close second. Dan Rowbottom rounded off the top three for Cataclean Plato Racing, with his teammate Adam Morgan placing fifth as all six drivers within the top six went under 51 seconds on the undulating Knockhill tarmac.
Qualifying
An overcast day with wind gusting across the circuit did nothing to deter the large crowds who turned out for Saturday. Several drivers fell foul of track limits in group one, losing their timed laps in the process. Morgan topped the charts in Group 1 of timed qualifying, with Gordon Shedden falling short by just three hundredths in Group 2, with Rowbottom and Morgan heading the first half of the field. Morgan's benchmark lap of 50.830 seconds was enough to set the tone for what was to come.
Race to Pole
As the lights went out and the pack thundered through Duffus Dip, it was the Plato Mercedes that sprinted away after an excellent start. Aiden Moffat went off at turn one onto the grass on the opening lap, possibly caught out by cold tyres or contact from a car behind. Rowbottom and Shedden touched at turn two, while Taylor-Smith and Josh Cook connected just before the chicane, sending Cook into the tyre wall and bringing out a full safety car period.
Rain spots confirmed a damp track on the restart as Morgan led the pack over the line once more. Cars slid around in the deteriorating conditions, dry tyres working hard as the weather worsened, but no one fell victim to the surface. The rain eased in the final third of the race to gift the crowd a series of overtaking moves. Morgan becomes the sixth different winner in as many Race to Poles this season, crossing the line ahead of Shedden and Rowbottom, with Chris Smiley fourth, Charles Rainford fifth, Daryl De Leon sixth, and Mikey Doble seventh among the independents.
Race 1
Large crowds braved the classic Knockhill weather for a rain-soaked race day and were rewarded with classic touring car racing. Morgan started his Mercedes A35 Saloon from pole position and was nearly two seconds clear after just two laps. Cataclean Plato Racing fulfilled their first one-two of the season as Rowbottom eventually passed Shedden on the fourth entry to Duffus Dip to claim second, with the local hero completing the podium. Sutton, who had started from 11th on the grid, sliced through the field and was hauling in Shedden when the safety car appeared, following Lewis Gilbert beaching his car at turn seven. Racing resumed on lap 23 with Morgan retaining his lead to the chequered flag. Sutton crossed the line fourth with Tom Ingram close behind, Ricky Collard sixth, and Patterson seventh after a strong recovery drive.

Race 2
The rain cleared to leave a damp but drying circuit and the tyre regulations put the race firmly in Sutton's hands. Morgan, Rowbottom, and Shedden were all compelled by the sporting regulations to run the medium-compound Goodyear tyres, with fourth-on-the-grid Sutton the highest-placed starter on soft rubber. Sutton's Alliance Racing-run NAPA Ford Focus Titanium was the class of the field in the conditions. Tom Ingram suffered front-end damage on lap one and retired. Gilbert spun at the hairpin, and Smiley ended up in the gravel on lap 22, bringing out a safety car and setting up a one-lap sprint to the finish. Last corner drama arrived as Hamilton came to a complete halt just after the hairpin, with all cars passing safely under waved yellows. Sutton took the win comfortably with Rowbottom second for his second podium of the day and Ricky Collard claiming the final podium spot.

Race 3
The sun broke through over Knockhill for the final race of the weekend, rewarding the crowds who had stayed for every lap across both days. Tom Chilton inherited pole position for the reversed-grid Race 3 after Sutton drew the unlucky 12th starting position. Chilton used a soft compound tyre advantage to sprint away through Duffus Dip at the start and led from lights to flag. Gordon Shedden suffered a nightmare start with a puncture causing his car to crab heavily through the opening lap. Dan Cammish, returning to the cockpit after missing the previous round, drove a composed race to claim the final podium position behind Morgan who recovered to second. Patterson and Rainford took fourth and fifth as Sutton found himself falling down the order in the mid-pack scrap.

Championship Standing
Knockhill was a pivotal weekend in the title fight. Sutton leaves Scotland with an 81-point lead over Ingram, with a maximum of 76 points available across a full BTCC weekend and four rounds remaining. The title is firmly in Sutton's hands. Whether anyone can take it from him is the defining question of the second half of the season.
The Kwik Fit BTCC returns on 22-23 August at Donington Park, this time on the full Grand Prix layout. Plato Racing have found their form. Sutton has found his advantage. Knockhill, as ever, delivered the drama to match its reputation.
