MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship | Round 8 | Donington Park | 10-12 July 2026
Donington Park delivered a landmark moment in the 2026 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend. Under blistering summer heat that sent shimmer rising from the tarmac and pushed track temperatures to extremes, Iker Lecuona finally stepped off the second step of the podium and onto the top. His maiden WorldSBK victory, his first in the World Championship category, ended Nicolo Bulega's extraordinary run of 25 consecutive race wins and brought Donington Park's passionate crowd to its feet.
It was Lecuona's first win in his 141st WorldSBK start, ending a 140-race wait that ranks second only to Andrea Locatelli's 154-race journey to the top step. The scale of that achievement cannot be overstated.

Superpole
Bulega continued his exceptional qualifying form by securing a record ninth consecutive WorldSBK pole position, pushing his championship-leading teammate Lecuona to within just 0.052 seconds. Yari Montella completed an all-Ducati front row, claiming his fifth front-row start of the season. Sam Lowes qualified as the leading British rider in fourth, with Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani completing the second row.

Race 1
Lecuona seized the holeshot into Redgate and controlled all 23 laps despite relentless pressure from Bulega. Never separated by more than half a second, Bulega held the advantage through the opening sectors before Lecuona repeatedly responded in the slower final sector. Bulega launched attacks into the Old Hairpin and Melbourne Loop on several occasions but each time Lecuona responded. In the closing stages Bulega tried once more at the Melbourne Hairpin on the final lap. Lecuona held his line and crossed the line 0.165 seconds ahead. The streak was over.
Montella completed the podium in third, with Sam Lowes a fine fourth on home soil and Thomas Bridewell delivering a standout performance to claim fifth for Superbike Advocates, running a special Union Flag livery in front of his home crowd. Ducati swept the top six positions, extending the manufacturer's run to 26 consecutive WorldSBK victories. Jonathan Rea's wildcard return ended in retirement after 19 laps.
Race 1 Result: 1. Iker Lecuona, 2. Nicolo Bulega +0.165s, 3. Yari Montella +6.711s, 4. Sam Lowes +11.668s, 5. Thomas Bridewell +14.272s

Superpole Race
Sunday morning brought cooler temperatures and a moment of reflection. A tribute and moment of silence for Marc van der Straten was held at his garage before racing began. On track, Lecuona made a strong start but crashed at Goddard's, the last corner, ending his race and leaving him pushed back to tenth on the grid for the afternoon. Bulega took the win ahead of Montella and Sam Lowes, reclaiming pole position for Race 2 and extending his championship advantage.
Superpole Race Result: 1. Nicolo Bulega, 2. Yari Montella, 3. Sam Lowes, 4. Alex Lowes, 5. Axel Bassani

Race 2
Bulega reasserted his authority in the afternoon, taking victory ahead of Lecuona who recovered superbly from tenth on the grid to finish second. Montella completed the podium once more to round off a remarkably consistent weekend for the Barni Spark rider. Axel Bassani and Alex Lowes rounded out the top five for Bimota Kawasaki.
Race 2 Result: 1. Nicolo Bulega, 2. Iker Lecuona +4.161s, 3. Yari Montella +6.850s, 4. Axel Bassani +15.346s, 5. Alex Lowes +15.582s

Championship Standings
Bulega retains a commanding lead at the top of the championship on 491 points, with Lecuona second on 358. Montella holds third on 211, with Alex Lowes on 182 and Sam Lowes closing to within five points of his brother in fifth on 177. The title fight may appear one-sided on paper, but Donington has proven that Bulega is not invincible. Lecuona now knows it too.
The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship heads into its mid-season summer break before returning at Magny-Cours in early September. Bulega leads. But the script has changed.
